A gorgeous day today hiking Culebra Peak - #43! The common area to hike Culebra Peak would be the 4×4 road start, but technically speaking you don’t even have to start there. Once inside the ranch, regulations were very minimal as long as you respected the land. 14ers Series Topographic Hiking Map 3 of 16 covers fourteeners Longs Peak on the front side and Culebra Peak on the back, including all hiking trails in the surrounding areas. It sits in the middle of the 77,000-acre Cielo Vista Ranch.

Once you book your hike, the Culebra folks will provide you with A nice easy saddle up to Culebra’s peak Even with the route not having a trail, once on top of the first of many (potentially 9) 13ers it was very easy to see Culebra looming and be able to trace the ridge all the way to the infamous 14er.

The next trailhead is the Upper Four-Wheel Drive Trailhead which is a mile further up the road.

From here the hike is only 2,800 feet in altitude.

Culebra is also unique in that it has no official trail. The first trailhead is known as Four Way and is where people who want to hike over 3,000 feet in altitude stop to hike from.

There are two trailheads for the hike up Culebra Peak.

Unlike any other Fourteener in Colorado, hiking impacts are largely absent – Culebra is essentially “untrailed”. There is a trail on 14ers.com and one on AllTrails.com, but it’s really every man for himself. I had a great time on the hike and hope to hook up with some of the hikers I met to climb more mountains in the future.
