The Stockholm Cathedral or Great Church (Storkyrkan) is located at the highest point of the island of Stadsholmen next to the outer courtyard of the Royal Palace. The Palace is located in Gamla Stan...the Old City. In the basement Museum Tre Kronor, you can see the foundations of 13th-century defensive walls and items rescued from the medieval castle during the 1697 fire. The Royal Guard has had a presence at the palace since 1523, when it consisted of 100-200 soldiers who were also responsible for the city's security arrangement and fire protection.

Outside there is also an impressive outer courtyard where you can witness the changing of the guard. It is has an inside courtyard with two stairways leading to the quarters.
