$26.. I found this an extremely well-written book.

Call a book “The Mothers” and you’ve burdened it from the jump.

THE MOTHERS By Brit Bennett 278 pp. This book is effective at putting the reader into the mind of a mother left to pick up the pieces of her life after she has violently lost her only child. Based on the title and description, I knew something was going to be up with the mother in law, and it was fairly predictable, but still had some twists along the way. Plot summary. It addresses numerous social problems and personal trials including racism, poverty, abuse, loss, guilt, and forgiveness. "Hireling" wolves cannot eat it! Despite the serious and very sad events depicted, it is ultimately a book about healing and hope. I was drawn to this book by the blurb and the length of it as it curled just under 300 pages for a quick, thrilling read. Whilst there is clearly a self-help aspect to this book, it doesn't feel superficial or unrealistic as I find some other books that address the same issues.I initially did find it triggering with the listing of what is good mothering and good mother messages - known, but a lot to take in and really hold and contemplate at once. The Mother-in-Law is the first book I have read by Judy Moore, but I would definitely read more. The description got me interested, and the story kept my interest until the end.
