Wheeler Peak is located outside Taos, in north central New Mexico. The mountain is located in Great Basin National Park and was named for George Wheeler, Wheeler Peak is located in Great Basin National Park in eastern Nevada.

Part of the South Snake Range, it is the second highest mountain in the state, less than 100 feet lower than Boundary Peak. Wheeler Peak elevation 13, 063 feet is a wonderful climb and a beautiful peak. Wheeler Peak is the tallest mountain in the Snake Range and in White Pine County, in Nevada, United States. The easiest and most popular route is just a walk-up on a well-marked trail. With a topographic prominence of 7,563 feet, Wheeler Peak is the most topographically prominent peak in White Pine County and the second-most prominent peak in Nevada, just behind Mount Charleston.

It is located northeast of Taos and south of Red River in the northern part of the state, and just 2 miles southeast of the ski slopes of Taos Ski Valley. A plaque at the summit states that The highest peak in New Mexico goes by the same name. It is only a few hours drive from other notable active travel destinations in New Mexico, including Santa Fe and Albuquerque.

Formerly named Taos Peak, after the nearby town of Taos, New Mexico, it was renamed Wheeler Peak in 1950. I started with my climbing partner Dean on Desatoya, then to Bunker Hill, Diamond Peak, and Ruby Dome. Wheeler Peak was my objective on October 6, 2004, the fifth day of climbing County Highpoints in Nevada.

The trail head for the Wheeler Peak hike, initially called the Williams Lake trail head at the beginning, can be found within the Taos Ski Valley. The summit elevation of 13,065 feet makes it the second-highest peak in Nevada, just behind Boundary Peak.
