Modelled after This is Tomorrow (1956), arguably the most influential exhibition in Whitechapel Gallery’s 118-year history, this new presentation brings together architects, artists, and other creative practitioners from around the world to highlight the potential of collaboration, to address key issues we face today and to offer a vision of the future. This was the backdrop to curator Bryan Robertson and architect Theo Crosby’s 1956 exhibition This Is Tomorrow, held at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in the war-scarred East End.

Central to the exhibition is Victoria Civera’s large circular painting of an eye that follows the viewer round the exhibition – that of the infamous Disney fawn, Bambi, whose struggles in the poignant children’s tale are testament to the destructive nature of humans towards nature. Re exhibiting the 1981 exhibition, A New Spirit in Painting shown at London’s Royal Academy of Arts, this exhibition demonstrates the exquisite art of painting through the work of 38 artists across America and Europe.
