Horses descended from Spanish mustangs have been living wild here for hundreds of years. Herd Areas were designated in 1971 as places where wild horses and/or burros were found during the initial flights in 1971. To survive on these islands, the horses dig for freshwater and swim from island to island in search of fresh grazing areas. Their underbellies and muzzles have pale white markings, and their legs are short and slender. Przewalski's horses can use their sharp hooves to get at water in the ground. Wild Horses of the Outer Banks The Outer Banks, barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina, are home to some unlikely animals. Wild horses are deeply embedded in our national psyche and roam the landscapes of our imagination, made famous by writers such as Elyne Mitchell (The Silver Brumby) and Banjo Paterson (notably The Man from Snowy River and Brumby’s Run). They are smaller than most domestic horse species and have stocky bodies, large heads, thick necks, upright manes, and a dark stripe down their backs. These horses are able to detect smell and sound from great distances. Dataset for BLM Wild Horse and Burro Herd Areas & Herd Management Areas.
