Masterson was a good friend and associate of the legendary lawman Wyatt Earp, who served both Dodge City, Kansas, and Tombstone, Arizona. According to records he was a good and decent man. However, Ed Masterson was fatally wounded on April 9, 1878, and was buried in a military cemetary at Fort Dodge .

James had 2 siblings: Bartholomew Bat Barclay William Barclay Masterson and Edward Ed Masterson . Ed Masterson went there and found Jack Wagner was carrying a gun against city ordinance. Jim later was made marshal and he ended up in a shooting match with a saloon keeper. In his late teens, Masterson and brothers, Ed and Jim, left their family's farm to hunt buffalo on the Great Plains.In July 1872, Ed and Bat Masterson were hired by a subcontractor named Raymond Ritter to grade a five-mile section of track for the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad.Ritter skipped out without paying the Masterson brothers all of the wages to which they were entitled. Jim Masterson’s career began as a buffalo hunter, a occupation he pursued off and on until 1878.
